Wintersession
For students enrolled full-time during the fall semester, tuition for Wintersession is included in their fall invoice. For those entering or readmitted full-time to RISD in the spring, Wintersession tuition is included in the spring semester invoice.
Students participating in Wintersession without enrolling full-time, and being billed full-time in at least one semester of that academic year are charged a separate Wintersession tuition of $2,570 per credit hour. Room and board is divided evenly between the fall and spring semester invoices.
For Wintersession travel programs, payment for associated travel costs must be paid by published due dates. Students who complete degree requirements and graduate in the fall are ineligible to participate in Wintersession.
Specific program and conditional costs
The information below covers the costs for programs and conditions that fall outside of standard RISD billing. If any of the below applies to you, please review to find your billing details.

Brown|RISD Dual Degree (BRDD)
Brown University assesses and determines all charges and aid for BRDD students. For more information, visit the Brown|RISD Dual Degree Program page.
Outgoing exchange students
RISD charges full tuition and mandatory fees to students participating in an outgoing exchange program. You will not be charged for on-campus housing and dining during your exchange semester.
Incoming exchange students
Incoming exchange students will pay the tuition and fees of your home institution. If you live on campus, RISD room and board charges will apply.
Visiting students
We bill full-time tuition and fees to students enrolled with visiting student status. Visiting students are ineligible for financial aid from RISD.
Non-degree candidates
Non-degree candidates who attend RISD are charged our per-credit tuition rate, which is $2,570 per credit for the 2024–25 academic year. Your payment is due at the time of registration.
For more information please see RISD’s student academic policies.
Reduced course load
If you are on an approved reduced course load of fewer than 12 credits, you will be billed per credit according to your registration.
The per-credit tuition charge is $2,570 for the 2024–25 academic year. Please note that tuition is not adjusted after the end of the add/drop period.
You will be billed a separate Wintersession per-credit tuition charge of $2,570 if you were on an approved reduced course load in both the fall and spring semesters and participated in Wintersession.
Students who enroll in fewer than 12 credits without approval for reduced course load are still charged full-time tuition. Federal aid, state aid, RISD funding and private loans may be impacted by enrollment less than full time.
Auditing classes
We do not bill additional charges for auditing classes if you are a current student enrolled full-time at 12 credits or more. Non-degree seeking students, including visiting or exchange students, are not eligible to audit.
For more information please see RISD’s student academic policies.
Other expenses and fees
Orientation fee: $300
This fee is required of all incoming students for their first semester at RISD.
Late payment fine: $200/500
For all balances equal to or greater than $2,000, we will assess the higher late payment fine.
Course, lab and material fees
Certain courses require additional costs. These fees may cover field trips or other course-related activities. Charges may be applied throughout the term, so monitor your account regularly.
Late or lost item fees
You may also be assessed fees, per departmental policies, for lost items or items borrowed beyond agreed-upon timeframes (e.g. studio equipment or keys).
Residence hall damage charges
If you reside on campus, you must leave your room in the same condition as you found it when you moved into your room. If it is found in lesser condition than it was when you moved onto campus, you could be subject to residence hall damage charges. These charges are assessed for violations of the housing contract, which include but are not limited to damages and vandalism.
School-sponsored travel
If you are planning to travel on a school-sponsored trip, you must ensure that your student account balance is paid in full at the time of travel registration. If you carry an outstanding balance you will not be eligible for travel and may not be reimbursed for any travel expenses already paid.
1098-T tax form
A 1098-T is a US tax form that lists the amount of payments toward qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE), as well as any scholarships and grants posted to your student account during the calendar year (January through December). This form is used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to help determine your eligibility for the American Opportunity Tax Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit educational tax credits.
We partner with Heartland ECSI to print and mail the 1098-T to domestic students who receive enrollment credit and have reportable GTRE transactions to file.
