Student Insurance
Protect your wellbeing and educational investment with our health insurance coverage and optional tuition insurance.
Health insurance
At RISD, we require all on-campus students to have health insurance. We provide United Healthcare coverage, administered by University Health Plans. You will be automatically enrolled and billed for our health insurance unless you submit a waiver and are approved to opt out of our coverage.
United Healthcare will notify you directly with details about how to access your health insurance card and policy information. If you have any questions, you can call 883 251-1147 or email info@univhealthplans.com.

How to waive RISD health insurance
You may waive our student health insurance if you are enrolled in a comparable, comprehensive US-based health insurance policy. You must submit the waiver by September 1 for each academic year. If you do not submit the online waiver you will be automatically enrolled in our health insurance coverage.

Tuition insurance
For students who suffer illnesses or accidents requiring them to leave RISD before the end of a semester, this can mean not only the loss of time invested in studies, but also the loss of the semester’s costs.
We have partnered with GradGuard Tuition Insurance to offer an optional tuition protection plan. This plan can protect up to 100% of your education investment if you can't complete an academic term due to an unforeseen covered accident, injury, chronic illness or mental health condition.
This coverage strengthens and broadens the scope of our existing refund policy by ensuring reimbursement for tuition and on-campus room and board if you withdraw for a covered medical reason at any time during the semester.
The application must be completed prior to the first day of classes. For more information or to view the policy coverage, please visit GradGuard, or contact 866 724-4384 or customerservice@gradguard.com.
